“Wherever you go, go with all your heart” 到底对应了孔子哪句话?

Confucius

中国文化博大精深,这句话一点也不假。不知道谁谁谁,那些外国人翻译或是采用中国古典文化,经常有些张冠李戴。我们的老子,孔夫子很多经典名言都被海外的学者采用,但是英文的翻译往往体现不出汉语当中原有的味道。

国外很多旅行者博客里经常会引用这句话经典牛津语录:“Wherever you go, go with all your heart”,而语录的落款却是Confucius(孔子)。这句话问倒了一堆人,我在网上搜了一遍又一遍,没有人知道到底是孔子说的哪一句话可以对映上。很多学者怀疑那些编牛津名人语录的人也可能只是胡乱翻译。

之后就看到很多人把这句话对应了“既来之,则安之”,我想了很久,还是觉得意思差太多了。“Wherever you go, go with all your heart”从字面上的意思很简单,就是无论你走到哪里,都要用心去做。再深沉一点去想,也可以说成:无论去哪,都要全心全意。无论你怎么翻,都无法比较“既来之,则安之”所带给我们的概念。

你说呢?

  1. This is very interesting. I was looking for the exact Chinese translation of this alleged quote from Confucius (German to Chinese).
I suspect it is fundamentally difficult to translate these philosophical texts appropriately. At least you can’t capture the meaning in a catchy phrase. The point here is not to promote a real understanding of Chinese philosophy, but to make people feel that they understand a part of Chinese culture.
In the case of the German translation of this homepage, however, Google Translate gave me a passable result.
I also came across a Japanese translation of this quote, which appears to have been based on the English translation. The meaning was again slightly different. Presumably a direct translation from Chinese into Japanese with a scientific background would have resulted in a completely different translation.
